MAKING ME TIME
I have been trying something new this week to get myself unstuck from the writing drought I have been feeling. I think it’s been partially because I am in a new set up at home for work and it has been difficult to relax and concentrate enough to write.
My wife’s schedule changed this week and she is no longer working from home. This means a lot of time alone for me and our routine we have had for the last 3 and half months is disrupted from what we were used to.
I decided to change my whole morning routine. I am a person who likes a schedule and to plan when things are going to happen. It probably runs hand in hand with my liking to control my life. Sometimes this doesn’t work out so well. It has sometimes annoyed others to have a schedule but it works for me. In the last few years I have really tried to be more flexible, I have really. Really
What I decided I would try is to get up 15 minutes earlier, so 5:30, still leave time for my coffee and social media catchup in bed. Then go to the basement where I have an elliptical and sit up bench and do my little work out, then shower and more coffee. This is the good part, I have my quiet morning meditation and then I write! Its only about 15 minutes of writing but it’s enough for two pages and I don’t feel like I am not doing something that is important to me. This week I have written every day, Hallelujah ---it has felt great!
I was finding that when my brain got quiet, I was writing the best blog posts in my head, unfortunately this would be as I was settling down to sleep at night or when I was trying to meditate in the morning. I should have just gotten up out of bed but I wouldn’t, I would stay in bed and hoping I would remember all this goodness, of course that would make for a restless sleep. I started wring a little before bed, trying to preempt the thoughts that would keep me awake, and that was not a good option for me as I am more of a morning person.
This has been a great solution for my writing infrequency, carving out some time, yes, I have to get up earlier, but anything is possible with coffee right?
