ALMOST GOT MY EYES PECKED OUT!

Every spring we buy a few hanging baskets for our back yard. Every year one basket is sacrificed. We hate to do it but we have to stop watering it. Luckily, this year it was the one that was under performing. A not-so-pretty purple fuchsia.

Two birds moved into it. They do this every year and most years we have a little family of chirping birds living in there. I am not sure if it is the same mom and dad chickadees, but maybe they are the offspring. I really don’t know for sure, because I am not up on the habits of chickadees.  What I do know is that they are very protective.

In years past, I would take the basket down to spy on the birds, but it’s too risky to think I could drop the basket and harm the birds. So I just put my phone over the top and try to get one good picture.

Last year they didn’t come. I think they were scared. The year before there were babies in the nest and they had just hatched and making all kinds of noise. One night we had heard a scuffling, thinking nothing of it until the morning. Pieces of the fuchsia and feathers were all over the patio. Not sure what kind of an animal would have jumped to that basket as it hangs alone and away from any ledge, but they got the babies. We tried to save one but it eventually passed. It was sad to think of the babies going that way and who knows maybe the parents too.

Yesterday I wanted to get a picture of the birds; it’s fascinating to me to see the new life. We can usually tell when the birds hatch as the parents are all over the yard clicking at us. I know they are just trying to distract us from touching their babies. For the record, I never touch the nest or the babies and now not even the basket.

I got up on the table and took this picture, they are barely moving, but they are making a fair amount of noise. I almost got my eyes pecked out as the momma bird came so close to me as I was looking, I really was afraid she was going to come at me. If I decide to risk it again to get a better picture in the next few days, I will post it here.
